From the conversation to a historical note
This post grew out of a short exchange about Alberta's beekeeping history in the 1980s. What began as a question about a supposed "N & S Alberta queen program" turned into a clearer picture of how beekeepers actually organized their work: not as a single provincial scheme, and not as a north–south queen exchange, but as two parallel, zone‑based breeding efforts within the Alberta Beekeepers Association.

Two Zones, One Goal
Introduction
During the 1980s, Alberta beekeepers worked within a distinctive, largely informal but highly purposeful framework: the development of locally adapted queen lines organized around two ecological zones—Southern Alberta and Northern Alberta.
This was not a single, branded "N & S Alberta Queen Program" in official documents, nor was it a program that exchanged queens between north and south. Rather, it was a zone‑based, association‑coordinated effort driven by practical needs:
- To reduce dependence on imported bees, especially from the United States,
- To improve overwintering survival in a harsh continental climate, and
- To maximize colony performance in a short, intense ~3‑month summer.
The following note records that work as experienced by a practicing beekeeper in Alberta from 1980 to 1990, and places it in its policy and environmental context.
Policy and disease background: why "local queens" mattered
By the early 1980s, Prairie beekeepers were already aware of the risks associated with importing bees from the southern United States:
- Tracheal mites and, later, Varroa mites were spreading through U.S. apiaries.
- Canadian regulators and beekeepers feared that continued imports would introduce or accelerate these pests in Canada.
- There was a growing consensus that domestic, locally adapted stock would be more disease‑resilient and better suited to Canadian winters.
This culminated in the 1 January 1988 federal ban on importing honey bees from the continental United States, initially framed as a two‑year embargo and then repeatedly renewed. Even before that formal ban, however, Alberta beekeepers were already moving toward self‑sufficiency in queen production, motivated by:
- Biosecurity concerns,
- The desire for winter‑hardy genetics, and
- The need for queens that could build up quickly and produce well in a short season.
The two zones: Southern and Northern Alberta
Within the Alberta Beekeepers Association, beekeepers effectively operated in two zones, each with its own environmental pressures and breeding priorities.
Southern Alberta zone
Geography and environment
- Centered on the Calgary–Edmonton corridor and extending into the southern foothills.
- Generally higher altitude ("mile‑high" conditions) with:
- More extreme weather swings (cold snaps, wind, hail, Chinook),
- Periods of drought or moisture stress, and
- Intense, mixed agricultural land use.
Breeding goals
In the south, selection emphasized:
- Winter hardiness – ability to survive long, cold winters and rapid temperature changes.
- Stress tolerance – resilience to variable forage, weather shocks, and management pressures.
- Reliable spring build‑up – queens that could get colonies strong quickly once conditions allowed, but without over‑extending before the main flow.
For many southern beekeepers, the priority was survival and consistency under tougher weather and agricultural conditions.
Northern Alberta zone
Geography and environment
- Lower altitude overall than the southern foothills.
- Similar continental season length, but with:
- Longer summer daylengths at higher latitudes,
- Often more favorable moisture in key areas, especially in the Peace River country.
The Peace River region was (and remains) a major canola, alfalfa, and mixed‑crop area with strong honey flows.
Breeding goals
In the north, selection could lean more toward:
- Exploiting long daily foraging windows – queens whose colonies could take full advantage of extended daylight during peak flow.
- High honey yield in a compressed season – rapid build‑up, strong foraging force, efficient nectar processing.
- Good fall conditioning – ensuring colonies entered winter well‑fed and compact, despite the northern climate.
Northern breeders thus focused on maximizing productivity under long days and rich forage, while still maintaining adequate winter hardiness.
Clarifying the "N & S" label: parallel work, not exchange
Importantly, there was no systematic north–south queen exchange.
Instead, each zone developed its own locally adapted lines:
- Southern queens were selected and tested primarily within southern conditions.
- Northern queens were selected and tested primarily within northern conditions, especially around the Peace River agricultural belt.
The "N & S" label referred to these parallel breeding streams within the Alberta Beekeepers Association, not to a formal program of swapping queens between zones.
This approach recognized that:
- A queen line that excelled in the foothills' harsh weather might not be optimal for the Peace River's long‑day honey flow, and vice versa.
- Local adaptation was more valuable than a single "provincial" type.
Practical outcomes for beekeepers
For those keeping bees on the ground, this zone‑based work translated into:
- Greater confidence in overwintering – fewer catastrophic winter losses when using locally bred, well‑adapted queens.
- More predictable honey crops – colonies that were synchronized with local flow patterns (early canola, alfalfa, wildflowers).
- Reduced reliance on imports – even before the 1988 ban, many beekeepers were already sourcing queens from within Alberta or other Canadian regions.
In a typical season:
- Southern beekeepers relied on queens that could withstand weather volatility and still produce a respectable crop off a short, intense flow.
- Northern beekeepers used queens that could push hard during long days in the Peace River country, then settle down effectively for winter.
Legacy
By the end of the 1980s, Alberta's beekeeping community had:
- A de facto network of local queen breeders organized around northern and southern zones,
- A strong cultural and practical commitment to domestic, adapted stock, and
- A foundation that made the 1988 import ban less disruptive than it might otherwise have been.
While this work rarely appeared under a formal program title in government publications, it was very real in the apiary: in the queens beekeepers chose, the lines they maintained, and the shared understanding that Alberta's conditions demanded Alberta's bees.
