Following on map trajectory posts in the main blog here and this blog here, here's another AI-assisted one.
The NYT article “Who First Circled the Globe? Not Magellan, Spain Wants You to Know” here completed the Portuguese Magellan circumnavigation story - interrupted by his death in the Philippines - with the Basque Elcano, both under the Spanish King's sponsorship... So much for history classes! AI was asked to post the waypoints for the route. Here they are mapped in four views, two classic & two ocean-centric (click each one to enlarge):
| Mercator projection allows straight lines for ship navigation (more here) |
| Natural Earth projection minimizes continental distortion |
| Spilhaus projection minimizes oceanic distortion |
| North Pole Azimuthal Equidistant, read on |
The last one is posted for fun: while the distortion is minimal near the North Pole, it's at the expense of the south polar regions being smeared out along the perimeter. Cartographers joke that makes Flat Earthers happy... that's why the oceans don't empty themselves over the edges of the disk!
